The Three Major Applications
Cabinetry style is largely determined by how the doors and drawers are applied to the face frame—known as application. There are three major applications, each providing a different interior design aesthetic.
Half-Inch Overlay
On Top of the Face Frame
More traditional in style, the half-inch overlay has been an elegant choice for as long as cabinetry as been around. Doors and drawers are applied in-front of the face frame, covering a half-inch around the perimeter of the frame.
Inset
Inside the Face Frame
Inset cabinets are an excellent choice when aiming for a sophisticated transitional look. Door and drawer fronts are situated inside the cabinet frame, fully revealing the surrounding rails of the face for a sleeker appearance and flush facade.
Frameless
No Face Frame
When seeking a more modern design, frameless cabinets are an excellent solution. The face frame of the cabinet is completely hidden by the door and drawer fronts, creating cleaner lines on the facade with minimal breaks in the color or grain.
